Lovely walk by the river – Cromwell Heritage Precinct

Rock mass anisotropy within the basement chlorite schists has been a major influence in geomorphic development, and extensive mass movement deposits now mantle the valley slopes. A chronology of events is presented, based in part on radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis, and geological and geotechnical aspects of slope instability are reviewed with reference to particular landslide areas. Slope evolution within the Kawarau Valley has major engineering and environmental implications, and these are discussed in relation to proposed hydro-electric development, roading and land use. Quantitative assessment of the stability of both rock and soil slopes must take account of the complex geological controls of slope development, and investigation methods are outlined. Part I — Pre-Glacial Origins. Some Field Examples of Toppling Failure.

Cambridge Accord In response to the division following the Lambeth Conference of the previous year, most Church of England bishops although not including the then Archibishop of Canterbury George Carey , and many others elsewhere in the Anglican Communion, agreed on a document that upheld the human rights of homosexual people, while recognising and not seeking to resolve division over the morality of homosexual acts. This came shortly after a similar controversy in England when an openly gay priest , Canon Jeffrey John , was appointed to become the Suffragan Bishop of Reading.

Eventually, however, John agreed to withdraw in order to avoid division.

Forty years of goldmining transformed Otago, with most present day towns owing their origins to the goldrushes. The dry climate, local pride and the work of Department of Conservation staff, has preserved the miners legacy – mud and stone buildings, intriguing machinery, golden sluiced cliffs, deep mine shafts and underground passages. Look for the sign of the panning miner, which identifies some of these historic sites along the trail.

With material dating back to , the Central Otago District Council Archives cover a significant period of history in the area administered by the Central Otago District Council and the local authorities which preceded it in the district. Now to complement this Maniototo-based facility, which the public can access by appointment only, the full archives list catalogue has been placed online to assist researchers. Also a portion of the archive records have been digitised to provide , global access via the Council website.

Records and Archives Officer Kas McEntyre said the initial focus for the new Online Archives Repository has concentrated on making maps and plans accessible at this stage. The site would continue to grow with more sample content and catalogue item descriptions added on a weekly basis, she said. Feedback on the new online repository is welcomed, including requests from interested residents, researchers and historians about what they would like to see made available online in the short-medium term.

Ms McEntyre is also happy to present to interested groups who may wish to learn more about how to use the new online repository and hear about future plans for digitising records.

Show more authors Abstract The Quaternary structure and geomorphology of Central Otago are dominated by anticlines which form above buried reverse faults. Where some of these faults reach the surface on the flanks of the ranges, trenching demonstrates their Late-Quaternary activity. Earlier work on drainage patterns in the area provided information about the style, relative timing and growth of these anticlines.

The library is also home to the famous Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript created by Celtic monks around the year The front exterior was designed in Tudor Revival and Modern Movement styles in order to allow it to harmonize with the next-door Abbey Gatehouse. It was built on a slope, and the front of the building is only three stories tall, but thanks to the two basement levels built into the hill, the back of the building has five stories.

Inside, the design is mostly Classical, featuring ample arches, marble flooring and a stunning turquoise glass mosaic at the entrance hall.

Show more authors Abstract Be concentrations measured in silica-cemented Tertiary sandstones in Central Otago have yielded minimum exposure ages of up to ka, some of the oldest ever recorded outside the dry valleys of Antarctica and some arid deserts. The silica-cemented sandstones outcrop as boulders in a region where their exposure is caused by the growth of anticlinal ridges above blind reverse faults.

Initial studies using a combination of in situ cosmogenic isotope measurements and geomorphological observations on one range have demonstrated the potential of this technique to investigate Late Cenozoic fault growth and erosion rates. The best-exposed and preserved occurrence of the quartz-rich boulders is at German Hill on North Rough Ridge, where their stratigraphic context and their sedimentary and diagenetic origin, together with their method of emplacement and preservation on the modern land surface, can be studied in detail.

These are all features that affect their suitability for cosmogenic isotope studies of landscape development and are discussed in this article. These ages imply that the uplift of North Rough Ridge by its underlying fault is a Quaternary phenomenon. This conclusion has implications for the likely earthquake recurrence on the fault, which with an estimated average long-term slip rate of 0.

Getty Images The Indian edition of dating app Tinder is trialing a new feature which gives women an additional level of scrutiny and security before they allow men to start messaging conversations, with a view to rolling the function out globally. The “My Move” feature allows women to choose in their settings that only they can start a conversation with a male match after both have approved each other with Tinder’s swiping function.

Normally, the app gives both parties to a successful match – where both have swiped yes on the other’s photograph – the right to text each other immediately. Tinder has been testing the function in India for several months and plans to spread it worldwide if the full rollout proves successful.

The early years We started in with modest ambitions and first planted five acres of pinot noir at our original little vineyard at Gibbston, Central Otago in the deep south of New Zealand. At the same time, our friend Roger Donaldson planted the land next door, hence the name Two Paddocks. Roger’s paddock proved to be a slow starter, which meant we had to go it on our own; however we kept the title.

His brand, Sleeping Dogs, takes its name from the first film we made together. I wanted to produce a good pinot noir that would, at the very least, be enjoyed by my family and friends. Frankly, my friends will pretty much drink anything, so this didn’t seem too hard.
